Slowly, Tomas approached, covered by his teammates. B Team had already discovered the body of the man behind the tri-barrel, and were now securing the area around A Team. With his bayonet fixed to his rifle, he pried up the visor on the man’s helmet and slipped the blade into an eye socket. The lack of response indicated he was truly dead. Black knelt next to him and surveyed the scene.
“First-rate armor, 50mm projector, lots of ammo, but look at this.” Black pulled a magazine from the man’s chest rig. “His magazines are in backward. Probably loaded them with the vest on the ground and not while he was wearing it. He’d have to flip them around to put them in the magazine well.” Black tossed the magazine onto the body. The Sappers would destroy it and the weapons when they moved forward. “It takes ten minutes to dress like a Soldier, but ten years to be one.” Tomas made two clicking sounds, which had been accepted company-wide as “Yes.”
“You’re a good boy, Tomas, now don’t go putting that bayonet away before you clean off the brains—it’ll make the scabbard stink something fierce.” Tomas clicked twice as Black left to check on the other positions.
After a two hundred year trip, a mission of exploration turns to one of survival. They left Old Earth to build a new home among the stars only to find out they were not alone. Now the veterans of that first desperate battle for survival lead an elite group of soldiers as they fight their way across the universe, using a blend of ultra-high tech weaponry and good old-fashioned savagery.

I wasn’t sure I’d like this book since I mostly read historical fiction and history. The book follows a Ranger company in the not to distant future. It has a realistic feel that bases the scenarios with timeless soldiering tactics and techniques. This mixed with where the author envisions future technology make for a good read. Give it try, I got really into it and finished it in couple days. Looking forward to number two.Product details

I really enjoyed this book and I think most will as well.
*Note I had the pleasure of reading an early iteration of this novel, courtesy of the author.*
With brisk pacing and gritty, hard-hitting prose, Shalala's freshman work is a thrilling read. You'd be hard-pressed to find another fantasy novel so firmly rooted in actual combat techniques and strategies, and with such verisimilitude as to make a reader periodically sit back in their chair, eyebrows raised, and say, "Wow." I look forward to Mr. Shalala's next book in this series!

After my 20+ years of service in Infantry and Special Ops, this is a stirring depiction of today's operations in the future. Fast moving, intense and realistic!
